Pressure Ulcers Can Cause Death!


  

Pressure ulcers, also known as pressure sores or bedsores, are injuries to skin and underlying tissues that results from prolonged pressure on the skin. They usually occur on skin that covers bony areas of the body such as buttocks, hips, heels and ankles (Mayo Clinic, 2011  ).


  

There are 4 stages of pressure sores:
  

Pressure ulcers may lead to death as a result from septicemia*. Pressure ulcers were reported as a cause of death in United States (US) among 114,380 persons between 1990 to 2001! (Redelings, Lee & Sorvillo, 2005  ).

Pressure ulcers also will increase the hospital cost as to treat the wounds involved beside of the patients' current illnesses.

Most of bedridden patients will have pressure sore if there is no two-hourly positioning** done. Usually two-hourly positioning will be done by staff nurses to the patients at hospitals. But, at home, family members do not know too much about these pressure ulcers and positioning.

So, to prevent pressure ulcers, especially at home, we are supplying ripple mattress to lessen the pressure on the skin that covers the bony areas of the body for bedridden clients.

Glossary:

septicemia*= blood poisoning,especially that caused by bacteria, or their toxins.

two-hourly positioning**= involving turning patient every two hours to prevent pressure sores. Includes recumbent, right lateral, left lateral, semi-Fowler's.
